1. Silybum marianum – colloquially identified as Cardus marianus, known as MILK THISTLE, or MARIAN THISTLE is used in cases of liver diseases,e.g. cirrhosis, jaundice etc.  It is believed to have relatively potent antioxidant properties.  It protects the liver membrane lipids against toxins and poisons.  It also enhances gallbladder secretion into intestines.  The plant extract has antifungal effects, and is used to treat digestive problems, e.g. lack of appetite, and to enhance overall performance levels.


2. Scutellaria baicalensis – also known as BAIKAL SKULLCAP, has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years.  It has properties that work as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-allergen.  Its leaves and root are most commonly used to treat nervous system disorders, for its calming properties; it is known to help with sleeping disorders, as well as to treat fevers, coughs, diarrhea, urinary conditions… .  A variety of tests have also shown its positive effects on cartilage regeneration.  It also reduces high-blood pressure, and can be applied to superficial burns and skin rashes.


3. Schizandra chiensis – CHINESE MAGNOLIA VINE, under the (TCM), i.e. Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is classified as an adaptogenic plant, containing various compounds; furthermore it is also referred to as “five taste fruit”, pointing to the fact that the berries taste bitter, salty, sour, hot and sweet all at once.  Adaptogens are herbs which promote a general state of balance, which means that they act in different ways depending on the condition of the patient.  It works well with patients with a chronic fatigue syndrome; in TCM it is frequently used to lower sugar levels in the blood stream.


4. Mentha piperita – commonly known as PEPPERMINT, is indeed a powerful antioxidant, which is regularly used as a culinary flavouring and traditional herb remedy.  Its leaves contain essential oil, and flavonoids = antioxidants, found naturally in plants that may trigger natural enzymes that fight disease when consumed.  Peppermint is typically used to treat digestive disorders, e.g. flatulence, improper/slow digestion, indigestion etc.

 

5. Cynara scolymus – or GLOBE ARTICHOKE plant leaf extract is used to treat a variety of medical conditions.  Artichoke leaf extract is frequently used to aid in healthy digestion.  It increases the flow of bile, which is essential to adequate digestion and healthy liver function.  Bile also helps to remove cholesterol from the body.  It has a soothing effect on both the kidneys, and liver; it also has diuretic properties.  It is said to be a “distant relative” of Silybum marianum.


6. Cnicus benedictus – or HOLY, BLESSED THISTLE, and ST.BENEDICT”S THISTLE, used to be recommended by herbalists to patients who were suffering from gout, stomach upset and fever in the Middle Ages.  The plants contain chemicals – cnicin, which is also believed to have anti-inflammatory features.  It might also be used for stimulating slow or sluggish livers.  It also has antibacterial, antiseptic and properties.  Some regarded it as part of anti-cancer herbal remedies.


7. Taraxacum officinale – often simply called “DANDELION”, a very common herb, but regarded by many as weed which we find annoying when it crops up in our lawns, has been as an herbal treatment for various conditions.  It has high levels of potassium, and vitamins A & C.  Its ability to stimulate and aid in bile secretion are worth mentioning; equally its link to non-invasive release of gallbladder stones.


8. Glycyrrhiza glabra – LIQUORICE, or licorice – has been seen as a natural remedy for a wide range of ailments in ancient Greece, in the Roman Empire as well as in the present, i.e. the TCM.  Licorice is rich in antioxidants, it protects and stimulates liver tissues functions, and prevents the harmful effects of free radicals.  Licorice root is used when treating digestive system problems, e.g. indigestion , flatulence etc.


9. Melissa Officinalis – SWEET or LEMON BALM, derives its main usage in the herbal medicine field from its anti-convulsion characteristics, especially in patients with digestive problems.
